The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission investigated 18 serving and retired military officers, mainly from the Air Force on misappropriation of funds meant for purchase of military equipment.

Most of the contracts were said to have been awarded to people who have no business and experience in arms and ammunition, which resulted in them purchasing fake and substandard weapons. The development led to the untimely death of many armed forces personnel fighting Boko Haram insurgency in the North east.
